Where it comes from

Our story of Tyiesha

The word tycoon came out of Japan with Perry's expedition. It was a title the shogun's officials used in dealings with foreigners — taikun, great lord — chosen specifically because it outranked what the visitors might otherwise assume. American diplomats brought it home, and its first real career in English was as a nickname: John Hay and John Nicolay, Lincoln's private secretaries, used it for the president in their letters and diaries, affectionately and slightly irreverently, through the war. Only after that did it drift to businessmen, arriving at its modern sense in the newspapers of the eighteen-eighties. A Japanese honorific became an American in-joke about a president and then the standard English word for a very rich industrialist, in about thirty years.

No source is documented. The prefix is a free American element; the base belongs to a family that was built in America and has at least six spellings. Glosses connecting this family to Arabic are added afterwards, and the family's own record does not support them.

Pronouncing Tyiesha

ty-EE-shuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The i after the prefix marks a syllable break that English has no letter for, which is the job it is doing here.

Fashion outlook

Tyiesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • The spelling is phonetic enough to be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Tyesha, Tyiesha and Tiesha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The i in the middle is easy to drop, which changes the syllable count.
  • No meaning can honestly be given for either element.
