Tyara is the word tiara spelled with a y, which also makes it Tyra with an extra a. The word it echoes has one of the odder stories in church history: the last papal tiara to be worn was given away by the pope who wore it, and it now sits in a basilica in Washington.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tyara

Tyara begins with a word everyone knows from wedding photographs and pageants, then rewrites it with the y of Tyra. The headdress behind the word traveled further than most names: from the Persian court into Greek and Latin, onto the heads of popes, and finally off them. Paul VI was the last pope crowned with one, and he laid it on the altar of Saint Peter's as a gesture to the poor; American Catholics brought it home, and it is kept at the national shrine in Washington. Tyara carries none of that by descent, only by sound.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tyara has no recorded meaning as a name. If it is tiara respelled, it borrows a word for a jeweled headdress that reached Greek and Latin from Persian; if it is Tyra lengthened, it takes on a Scandinavian name of uncertain source. The record does not say which.

Pronouncing Tyara

tye-AR-uh

The y invites tye-, as in Tyra. Others will say it exactly like the word, tee-AR-a.

Tyara sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tyara sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Echoes a familiar word, so it is easy to remember.
  • The y links it to Tyra and gives it the look of a name rather than a word.
  • Three syllables with the stress in the middle, simple to call.
What to consider
  • Many will write Tiara and say it tee-AR-a; if the family says tye-AR-a, expect to repeat it.
  • A name that echoes a word carries the word's associations, here crowns and pageants. Most people find that pleasant, and the teasing it invites is mild.
