Our story of Trystan
Tristan da Cunha is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic, about fifteen hundred miles from the nearest inhabited land, with a few hundred people, no airstrip and a settlement whose full name is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. In nineteen sixty-one the volcano erupted beside the village and the entire population was evacuated, first to Cape Town and then to England, where they were housed in a former RAF camp in Hampshire and became a press sensation. They were offered permanent resettlement. Within two years, after a vote, almost every one of them went back to an island with a live volcano on it, and the community is still there. Sociologists who studied the episode mostly concluded that the islanders found English life lonely.

Not established
The name probably descends from a Brittonic personal name attested on a sixth-century Cornish stone, and the tri- spelling appears to have been reshaped under the influence of the French word for sad. What the original meant is not recoverable.

Fashion outlook
Trystan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is the genuine Welsh spelling rather than an invention.
- Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
- Tristan and Triston are both commoner and will be written for it.
- The changed letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- The legend attached to the name ends badly, which some families mind.
