Tru
Feminine · Old English roots · “true”
Tru is given to both — 2,530 girls and 3,794 boys since 1880. See Tru as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Tru is the English word "true" with the final letter set aside — one syllable, three letters, and no one has to ask how to say it. It has served for generations as the household clip of Truman and Truett before parents began writing it on birth certificates on its own. Its wave in the US is very recent, so a child carrying it now is part of the first real cohort to have it as a full name rather than a shortening.
How old is the name Tru?
Tru first appears in US birth records in 1995 — 30 years ago. The typical Tru is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,500 people named Tru are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Tru
The English word behind it is trēowe in Old English, meaning faithful or trustworthy, and it gave English the surname Truman — a faithful man — which later became a first name in its own right, along with Truett. Tru began life as the spoken shortening of those longer names, the kind of clip that never needed a spelling until someone wrote it down. It surfaced in print as the title of a 1989 one-man Broadway play about the writer Truman Capote, who was known as Tru. Its use as a standalone given name in the United States belongs to the last stretch of the twentieth century onward, part of the broader English habit of naming children after plain virtue words.

The Naima test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tru's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Naima climbed just as high around 2006, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Naima's path sketches the road Tru is walking now.
Tru is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

Where Tru is headed
Tru looks set to keep climbing gently, with roughly 48% more babies a year by 2030 if the current curve holds. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Read correctly on sight by anyone who speaks English — three letters, one syllable, no ambiguity in the sound.
- Works both as a complete given name and as the natural short form if you ever want Truman or Truett on the birth certificate.
- Sits comfortably on a child of either sex, with no change in spelling or pronunciation.
- Short enough to fit any surname, and easy for a small child to write early.
- The missing final "e" will be supplied by other people for life. Expect "True" on forms, coffee cups and class lists, and a lifetime of gentle spelling corrections.
- Virtue words invite comment. A name that means faithful will draw the occasional pun from teachers, coaches and colleagues, most of it good-natured but steady.
- Its rise is very recent, which cuts both ways: almost certainly the only Tru in the school, and also a name that will read as belonging to this particular moment.
- It leans to boys without settling there, so a girl named Tru may be assumed male on paper before she is met in person.
