The Roman patricians were the families who claimed descent from the original senate, and the word stayed in use through the empire as a title granted by emperors rather than inherited. It reached Ireland attached to a missionary who described himself in his own writing as a sinner and the least of the faithful, and who is now the reason the name exists in English at all. English made Patricia in the eighteenth century, largely in Scotland, and the short forms followed: Pat from the front, Tricia and Trish from the middle, Patsy from a different route entirely. Trish is the leanest of them and the only one that keeps nothing else.
