Our story of Trini
For centuries the clearest scriptural statement of the doctrine was a sentence in the first letter of John naming three that bear witness in heaven. It is not in any early Greek manuscript. It appears first in Latin, in the margins of Spanish and African texts from late antiquity, apparently as a comment that a later copyist absorbed into the text. When Erasmus prepared his Greek New Testament he left it out, because his manuscripts did not have it, and was attacked for undermining the faith; he replied that he would put it back if a single Greek manuscript could be produced. One duly was — written recently, probably to order — and he included the verse in his next edition with a note saying what he thought of it. From there it entered the translations that shaped English-speaking Christianity, and it has been quietly dropped from almost every modern edition since.

It shortens the Spanish Trinidad, a devotional name referring to the Trinity, which is also the name of an island. Which of those a given family had in mind is not recoverable, and the short form registered alone points back to neither. Devotional names of this kind are given to children of either sex, which is why the record looks the way it does.

Fashion outlook
Trini sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two open syllables are easy for a small child to say about themselves.
- It works for a child of either sex, as Spanish devotional names generally do.
- Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
- It reads as a short form, and people will ask what it stands for.
- It is also the everyday word for a person from Trinidad, which may or may not be wanted.
- The record holds it for sons as well as daughters, so it signals nothing about which.
