Where it comes from

Our story of Trenda

To trend meant to turn. It is an Old English verb about revolving or rolling, and its technical survival is geographical: a coastline trends north-east, a seam of rock trends in a direction, and geologists and surveyors use the word in exactly that sense with no notion of fashion in it. The statistical meaning — a general direction of change over time — arrived in the nineteenth century as a metaphor from that, and trendy did not appear until the nineteen-sixties, at which point the word acquired an entirely new set of associations and effectively became a different thing. Something trending now is a description of a chart rather than a coast. The older word is still doing its job in survey reports, and nobody reading one thinks it is about popularity.

Not established

It may rest on the English word, which had a different sense when this name appeared; or it may belong to the Brenda and Glenda family, which produced a great many names on the same pattern. Nothing in the record decides.

Trenda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1965, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Trenda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • It is rare while being built entirely from familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Brenda, Glenda and Trenda will all be confused with one another in speech.
  • The modern sense of the English word is hard to keep out of it.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has two answers and no evidence.
