Trena is the tail of Katrina, which is itself a shortened Catherine, which is a name with no recovered meaning. Three reductions and a blank at the end — but the reductions are the interesting part, because each one was made in a different language and none of them was made in English.

Where it comes from

The story of Trena

German and Dutch shortened Katharina to Katrin and Trientje; Scandinavian languages produced Trine; Italian and Spanish cut Caterina to Rina and Trina. English, which cuts from the front, would never have produced Trina on its own. So the name arrived in America already shortened, from several directions at once, and the e in this spelling is the one American contribution — separating Trena from Trina on the page while leaving the sound where it was.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Greek Aikaterine has no established origin; the pure reading was attached centuries later on the strength of a resemblance. Katrina is the German and Scandinavian contraction, Trina the further clipping from the back, and Trena an American respelling of that. So the name inherits an open question and adds nothing to it. Saying so plainly is more useful than repeating the tidy answer.

Fashion outlook

Trena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Katrina is available as a formal long form with an enormous European history.
  • Five letters and two syllables, easy against any surname.
  • The e distinguishes it visually from Trina without changing the intended sound.
What to consider
  • The first vowel can be read long or short from this spelling, so the name is said two ways.
  • Trina is the more common spelling and will be substituted.
  • It is closely tied to the middle of the last century and dates a person fairly precisely.
