Where it comes from

Our story of Trecia

Treacle was a drug before it was a syrup. The Greek word theriake meant an antidote against the bite of a wild beast — from therion, a venomous animal — and the compound that carried the name was a famous one: a mixture of dozens of ingredients including viper flesh, prepared under supervision and sold at great expense. Venice treacle was the prestige brand, made in public once a year with the ingredients displayed so buyers could see they were genuine, and it was regarded as a general panacea for centuries. English apothecaries made their own. The word slid: from the antidote, to any medicinal syrup, to the sweet syrup the medicine was suspended in, and finally to the thick black byproduct of sugar refining that English speakers now mean by it. A treacle tart is named, at four removes, after snakebite.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It is a short form of Patricia with the front removed and the vowel altered, which leaves it several steps from the Latin word for a patrician. Some families may have built it from the sound instead. The record holds the short form alone and does not say.

Pronouncing Trecia

TREE-shuh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ci says sh here, following the Latin rule that gives Patricia its middle sound, so the e in front of it is doing nothing at all.

Fashion outlook

Trecia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • It is compact and fits any form without abbreviation.
What to consider
  • Tricia, Trisha and Treacia are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The changed vowel is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a short form, and people will ask what it stands for.
