Where it comes from

The story of Trang

Vietnamese names are built in three parts and the middle one used to do a job English has no equivalent for. A woman's name traditionally carried the middle element Thị and a man's carried Văn — markers of sex sitting between the family name and the personal one, so that the sex of the bearer was legible in the written name itself before anyone reached the last syllable. The practice was near-universal for centuries and has faded steadily since the middle of the twentieth century, with parents choosing middle elements for sound and meaning instead. In America the middle name is usually dropped altogether at the point of immigration, which is one reason a Vietnamese name that was unmistakably a woman's at home can arrive here carrying no signal at all — and this spelling is recorded in the United States for sons as well as daughters.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Vietnamese has a large layer of vocabulary borrowed from Chinese over a thousand years, and personal names are drawn mostly from it. The syllable in this name corresponds to more than one Chinese character: one gives a sense of dignity, seriousness or a solemn manner; another gives adornment or elegance. Both are used in names. In the Latin alphabet the two are written identically, so the meaning of any particular person's name is fixed by their family and their characters, not by the spelling — which is why no dictionary can tell you what this name means without knowing whose it is.

How the name formed

  1. Chinese vocabulary enters Vietnamese over a thousand years of contact
  2. Vietnamese names take the form family name, middle element, personal name
  3. Thị and Văn mark women's and men's names in the middle position
  4. The practice fades, and the middle element is often dropped in America

Pronouncing Trang

trahng

One syllable. The vowel is the one in father rather than the one in hang, and the ng at the end is the sound in sing, not a hard g. English speakers routinely rhyme it with rang, which is the single most common error and an easy one to correct once.

Trang sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 74 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Trang sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, memorable and written the same way in Vietnamese and English
  • Carries a real cultural inheritance rather than a decorative one
  • One syllable, so it never gets shortened into something unrecognizable
What to consider
  • The vowel is said wrongly by most English speakers on first meeting, and the correction has to be made every time.
  • The Latin spelling hides which meaning the family intended, so the child needs to be told rather than look it up.
  • In American records this spelling is given to sons as well as daughters, though in Vietnam it belongs to women.
