Where it comes from

The story of Tracye

William de Tracy was one of the four knights who rode to Canterbury after Henry the Second lost his temper about the archbishop, and he is named in every account of what happened in the cathedral that December evening. What happened afterwards is less often told: the four were not executed or imprisoned. They were excommunicated, sent to do penance in the Holy Land, and largely forgotten, and de Tracy is said to have died on the way. The family kept the name and kept its lands, and a Norman village that nobody outside France has heard of ended up as a common American girls' name eight hundred years later.

Meaning

from Tracy, a place in Normandy

There are two villages called Tracy in Normandy and the surname comes from one of them, arriving in England with the men who came over with the Conqueror. As a first name it is an American development of the last century, and it moved from men to women in the middle of it. This spelling is a variant of a variant: the surname became a first name, the first name acquired half a dozen spellings, and this one adds a final letter that the pronunciation does not use.

Fashion outlook

Tracye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody ever needs help saying it.
  • It works for a son or a daughter, and the record carries it on both sides.
  • The Norman history behind it is real and easy to tell.
What to consider
  • The final letter will be dropped by everyone who writes the name down.
  • It is closely dated to the middle decades of the last century in all its spellings.
  • There are at least four common spellings and she will be given each of them in turn.
