The story of Tonyia
Willa Cather's My Ántonia tells of a Bohemian immigrant girl on the Nebraska prairie, and Cather drew her from Annie Sadilek, a real girl she knew growing up in Red Cloud. The novel made Antonia an American name as much as a European one. English and Russian both shortened it, to Toni and Tonia on one side and Tonya on the other, and Tonyia combines the y of Tonya with the i of Tonia, with nothing in the record to say why.
