Tonita
Feminine
Saint Anthony's fire was ergot poisoning, and an order was founded to nurse the people who had it. Rye infected with a fungus produced burning limbs, gangrene and hallucinations across medieval Europe; the hospital brothers who took the saint as their patron treated it without ever knowing what it was, and their patients recovered because the hospital bread was made from wheat.

The story of Tonita
The cure was accidental and the reasoning was wrong. Sufferers traveled to the order's houses, ate different bread for weeks, and improved; everyone concluded that the journey and the relics had done it. Outbreaks followed the rye harvest and the wet years, which nobody connected until the eighteenth century, and the last significant one in western Europe happened in living memory. The same compound, isolated and modified, later gave medicine a drug for migraine and gave the twentieth century something more notorious, which is a long career for a fungus that lives on grass.

Not established
The Roman clan name behind Antonia has no recoverable meaning; it is probably Etruscan, and the flower and the sense of priceless attached to it later are both inventions. This spelling is the Spanish affectionate form of that name, so what is uncertain at the root stays uncertain here.

Fashion outlook
Tonita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two short forms in two languages, both of them established names.
- It is a standard Spanish affectionate form rather than an American construction.
- Every sound in it is available to an English speaker.
- English speakers reduce the vowels and produce a noticeably different name.
- There is no meaning at the root to give a child who asks.
- It reads as an affectionate form rather than a formal name in Spanish.
