The story of Tonie
Renaissance scholars, working through Latin with Greek in mind, saw the name and thought of anthos, the Greek word for a flower, which would justify a th. It would not: the name is Etruscan in origin and predates any contact with Greek. But the h went in, English adopted it, and by the nineteenth century English speakers were pronouncing it as well, so that a false etymology changed how millions of people say a name. Italian, Spanish, French and German all kept Antonio, Antoine and Anton without it. Tonie is the familiar form of any of them, and in the American record it goes mostly to girls, with a real minority of boys.

Fashion outlook
Tonie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
- It serves several long names in several languages, which gives a family options.

- Toni and Tony are both commoner and will be written instead.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States, more often for boys.
- It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for something longer.
