Where it comes from

Our story of Toinette

Our story of Toinette takes place in Paris in February 1673, on the stage of the Palais-Royal. Molière himself was playing Argan, the man convinced he is dying, and Toinette, his quick-tongued maid, was the one person in the play who never believed a word of it. She disguises herself as a physician, prescribes absurd cures, and helps the household's young lovers win. At the fourth performance Molière was taken ill on stage, finished the play, and died at home that night. He spent his last performance opposite the maid who knew he was not sick.

Fashion outlook

Toinette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A leading role in one of the most performed comedies in French carries this exact spelling.
  • Two syllables, a clear stress on the end, and Antoinette behind it for a family that wants the connection.
What to consider
  • The oi will be read as in toy by many, and the correction is needed early.
  • In French it reads as a short form, much as Toni does in English, and some will ask what it is short for.
