Tiffney
Feminine · “Appearance of God”
Tiffney removes the vowel that carries the middle syllable and English puts it back. The standard spelling has three syllables and this one writes two, but nobody says two: the cluster left behind cannot be pronounced without a small vowel in it, so the reader supplies one automatically.

The story of Tiffney
In most of Europe that feast is when the presents arrive, not Christmas Day. Spanish and Latin American children put out shoes for the three kings on the night of the fifth of January; Italy has an old woman on a broomstick who fills stockings on the same night; parts of Germany and central Europe send groups of children round the houses to chalk a blessing over the door. The English-speaking world moved the giving to the twenty-fifth in the nineteenth century and left the sixth as an afterthought about taking the decorations down. A name from that feast is therefore commemorating the day that most of Europe still treats as the point of the whole season.
Meaning
Appearance of God
Greek theophaneia, the showing of a god, which is the feast now called Epiphany; medieval English wore it down until it came out as Tiffany. The name was given to girls born around the sixth of January and the connection was forgotten completely by the modern period.

Fashion outlook
Tiffney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
- It has a documented history running back eight hundred years, which nobody expects.
- The spelling is shorter than the standard form without losing anything that is said.
- Tiffany is enormously commoner and this will be read as a slip.
- The written form looks like it has two syllables and does not.
- It is closely dated to the last decades of the twentieth century.
