The story of Tiernan
Tighearnán was a real early Irish name and the O'Rourkes of Breifne used it repeatedly — a twelfth-century Tighearnán Ua Ruairc is one of the men whose quarrel is traditionally blamed for bringing the Normans to Ireland. The surname Ó Tighearnáin became Tiernan in English. It reached America with Irish emigration, and its use as a given name is recent and belongs with Declan and Ronan.
Meaning
little lord
From Irish Tighearnán, a diminutive of tighearna, a lord or master; the same word is the ordinary Irish term for the Lord in religious use, which gives the name a double register.

Tiernan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karey climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karey's path sketches the road Tiernan is walking now.
