This is not a Victorian invention or a modern feminising of a man's name. Thomasine was an ordinary English woman's name for centuries, common enough in Tudor and Stuart parish registers to be unremarkable, and the surprise is not that it exists but that it ever stopped being usual.

Where it comes from

The story of Thomasine

The apostle behind the name has a living inheritance a long way from where his story is usually told. On the Malabar coast of southern India there are Christian communities who trace their church directly to him, holding that he arrived by sea in the first century, preached along the coast and died near Madras. Whatever the history, the communities are genuinely ancient: they were established long before European missionaries reached India and had their own liturgy, their own bishops and their own Syriac language when the Portuguese arrived and were astonished to find them. They are among the oldest continuous Christian populations anywhere, and they are named for him.

Meaning

twin

The base name is Aramaic and means a twin. It functioned as a description before it functioned as a name, which is why the Greek gospels supply a translation alongside it rather than treating it as a proper noun.

Fashion outlook

Thomasine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is genuinely old rather than an invented feminine, which few names of this shape can claim.
  • Tamsin sits inside it as a short form with an independent history.
  • The meaning is concrete and unusual without being obscure.
What to consider
  • It is long and the spelling will need giving letter by letter.
  • Thomasina and Thomasin are both standard and will be substituted.
  • The ending is unstable, so the name has two respectable pronunciations.
