Thomasina is the Latin way of making a woman's name from a man's, and English kept it in full when it usually would not. What is stranger is what happened to it in the West Country, where the same name wore down to something almost unrecognizable and became a regional name in its own right.

How old is the name Thomasina?

Thomasina first appears in US birth records in 1904 — 121 years ago. The typical Thomasina alive today was born around 1960, making them about 65 years old. About 2,600 people named Thomasina are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Thomasina most popular?

Thomasina peaked in 1932, reaching #969 nationally. See the whole 1932 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Thomasina

Two endings were available for making a woman's name from Thomas, and English used both: the Latin -ina and the French -ine, giving Thomasina and Thomasine. Both were ordinary names in Tudor and Stuart England, common enough to turn up in parish registers without comment. In Cornwall and Devon, Thomasine went further. Local speech pulled it down to Tamsin, dropped the middle entirely, and produced a name that has been distinctively West Country ever since and that most people do not connect with Thomas at all. Thomasina is the fuller survivor, and it carried into American records at the turn of the twentieth century.

Meaning

Thomasina sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1966, with 85 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Thomasina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is built on one of the most recognizable names in Europe, so nobody has to be told what it is.
  • It carries an unusually wide set of short forms, from the very traditional Tamsin to the plain Ina.
  • The Latin method behind it is transparent and easy to explain in a sentence.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long for a modern American name, and it will usually be shortened by others before it is shortened by you.
  • Thomasine, Thomasena and Tomasina are all in the record and will be offered instead.
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the older and the newer readings.
