Where it comes from

The story of Thomasena

In John's gospel the apostle is introduced three times as Thomas, called Didymus, and Didymus is simply the Greek word for twin. The writer is translating the name for an audience that would not have caught it, which is a small piece of evidence about who the book was for. Whose twin he was is never said, and later traditions supplied several answers, some of them startling. The apostle is best known for demanding physical evidence, which gave English the phrase doubting Thomas and rather misrepresents the scene, since the text has him producing the strongest statement of belief in the whole book about ninety seconds later.

Meaning

twin

The Aramaic word behind Thomas means a twin, and the gospel of John glosses it in Greek each time the apostle appears. The reading is settled; only the feminine ending here is undocumented.

Fashion outlook

Thomasena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
  • Tommie and Sena are both available as short forms and both are usable.
  • The name behind it is ancient and understood everywhere without explanation.
What to consider
  • Thomasina is the commoner spelling, so this version will be corrected to it regularly.
  • Four syllables is a lot for an American form, and it will be shortened by other people first.
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
