Theresia
Feminine · “possibly a harvester”

The story of Theresia
The woman who made this particular ending familiar inherited a throne nobody thought she could hold. Her father spent his reign persuading Europe to accept a daughter as his heir, everybody signed, and within weeks of his death half of them invaded anyway. She fought a war for eight years to keep the inheritance, lost a province and kept the rest, reformed the army, the taxes and the schools, ruled for four decades and had sixteen children while doing it. She was never formally the emperor — that title went to her husband and then her son — and she governed everything regardless.

Fashion outlook
Theresia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The Latin ending gives it a fuller and more formal shape than the shorter forms.
- It is a standing name in German and Dutch rather than an English respelling.
- The short forms are numerous and cross several languages.
- Theresa is far commoner in America and will be substituted constantly.
- Four syllables is long and most people will shorten it immediately.
- The meaning has never been settled and cannot honestly be given as if it had.
