A Bronze Age eruption, one of the largest in human history, blew out the center of it and left a ring of cliffs around a flooded crater — and under the ash on the surviving rim sits a town with two-story houses, drains, and wall paintings of boats and antelopes, abandoned in time for the inhabitants to get out, since no bodies have been found. Whether the ash and the wave that followed brought down the palace culture on Crete is argued about constantly and cannot be settled. What is certain is the shape of the island, which is the shape of the hole, and which every visitor sails into without usually realizing what they are inside.
