Where it comes from

Our story of Texie

Texas is a Caddo word. Spanish missionaries in the late seventeenth century recorded that the people of the Hasinai confederacy greeted them with taysha, meaning friends or allies, and the Spanish took it for the name of the nation and then of the province, writing it tejas. It is not a Spanish word and it does not describe the land; it describes a relationship, and the relationship was an alliance against the Apache. The state kept the sense when it chose its motto, which is the single word Friendship, and the Caddo confederacy that supplied the word was largely destroyed by disease and displacement within two centuries of the encounter. The name on the map is a greeting recorded by the people it was addressed to.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It may be the state name with the familiar ending the period attached to everything, or it may be a clipping of a longer name. Both patterns are well attested in the same decade and the record does not distinguish them.

Pronouncing Texie

TEK-see

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The x is doing its usual job of carrying two consonants, so the name is three sounds longer than it looks.

Fashion outlook

Texie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • Tex detaches as a short form with a long history of its own.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
What to consider
  • It is unmistakably a place name with an ending, and readers will hear the state first.
  • Texanna, Texia and Tessie will all be written for it.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has two answers and no evidence.
