Tesia
Feminine
Tesia is a Polish pet form that also looks like an American coinage, and an American record cannot tell the two apart. Polish builds affectionate names with an ending that English has no equivalent for — a system so regular that a Polish speaker can produce the pet form of a name they have never heard before, which no English speaker can do.

The story of Tesia
The Polish system is worth describing properly because it explains the shape of the name. Slavic languages carry a great deal of feeling in their endings, and Polish in particular has a set of them that mark a name as intimate rather than formal — not shorter, necessarily, but softer, with the consonants palatalised into something a grandmother would use. The result is that almost every Polish name has an everyday twin, and the twin is used far more than the formal version. A Polish family in America keeping this habit produced names that look, on an English page, like inventions. They are the opposite: they are the most conservative thing in the language.
Meaningnot established
Not established
In Polish this is a familiar form of Teresa, made the way Polish makes all of them: take the front of the name, add a soft ending, and the result is a real name that everybody understands as affectionate. Zofia becomes Zosia, Katarzyna becomes Kasia, Teresa becomes Tesia. English has nothing like it — our pet forms are irregular, one at a time, and half of them have to be learned individually. Whether a particular American Tesia came from that system or from the same impulse that produced Tasha and Tanisha is not recoverable.

Pronouncing Tesia
TESH-uh
In Polish the s before the i is soft, giving something between s and sh, and the name has two syllables. American speakers usually say TEE-see-uh or TESS-ee-uh, both of which are ordinary English readings of the letters.

Fashion outlook
Tesia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and readable at sight, whatever pronunciation a reader arrives at.
- Tess is available immediately and is a complete name with its own literary history.
- It carries a Polish family history for those who want it and works without one for those who do not.
- There are two defensible pronunciations, the Polish one and the American one, and she will hear both.
- It will be written Tessia, Tesha and Teshia by people who have heard it once.
- The Polish connection is invisible on the page and will need explaining every time.
