Where it comes from

Our story of Terrilyn

There is a pleasant accident in the front of this name. Terry cloth — the fabric a towel is made of — is named from a French word about pulling: in weaving it, extra loops of thread are drawn up and left uncut, and those loops are what make a towel absorbent. The word has nothing to do with the name, and the two have been sitting next to each other in English for a century without either noticing. That is roughly what this name is like as a whole: a set of familiar pieces standing together, pleasantly, without any of them meaning much. The rhythm is the real content — three syllables, the weight at the front, a soft landing at the end, which is precisely the shape American parents were reaching for in the years it was made.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Terri can come from Teresa or from Terence, and neither supplies a meaning anybody can rely on: Teresa's origin has never been established, and the earth reading offered for it rests on nothing but its resemblance to the Latin terra. The ending carries no meaning of its own. What the name has instead is a documented shape and a datable origin, which is more than many inherited names can show.

TER-ih-lin

Three syllables, stress at the front. The middle syllable is barely there in ordinary speech, which is why the two-syllable Terrilyn and Terlyn both turn up.

Terrilyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 60 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Terrilyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight, with no sound in it that anybody has to be taught.
  • It shortens two ways, and both short forms stand up as names by themselves.
  • It is rare now while being entirely familiar in sound.
What to consider
  • Terrilynn, Terralyn and Terilyn are all in use, so the spelling will be checked often.
  • The name places its bearer in one American generation fairly precisely.
  • There is no meaning behind it, and the earth reading sometimes offered for the front is not one.
