Where it comes from

The story of Terrie

Teresa was a Spanish and Portuguese name of limited range until a sixteenth-century Carmelite reformer from Ávila made it one of the most-given names in the Catholic world. English-speaking countries took it up much later, generally as Theresa, and the clippings followed in the twentieth century — written four ways at once: Terri, Terry, Teri and Terrie. This spelling peaked in the mid-1960s.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Teresa's origin is genuinely unestablished. The two most-repeated suggestions — the Greek theros, 'summer', and the island of Therasia near Santorini — are both reconstructions working backwards from the sound. The name appears first in Spain and Portugal, and that is where the trail both begins and stops.

Terrie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 1,110 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Terrie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Teresa behind it is one of the most widely used women's names in the Catholic world.
  • The -ie ending reads warmer than -i or -y without changing the sound.
  • Bright and easy in English, Spanish and Italian mouths alike.
What to consider
  • Four spellings were current at once, so it is written wrongly more often than rightly.
  • Terry is also a common man's name, which makes the sound unisex whatever the spelling.
