Terrah adds a silent letter borrowed from a transliteration habit that has nothing to do with this name. The Latin word behind it produced a French concept that English decided it could not translate and simply took whole.

Where it comes from

Our story of Terrah

Terroir is French for the taste of a particular piece of ground. The idea is that soil, slope, drainage, aspect and local weather together give a wine — or a cheese, or a honey — a character that cannot be reproduced anywhere else, and that this is worth protecting legally. The French appellation system is built on it: the boundaries are drawn round the ground rather than round a producer, and two vineyards separated by a track can carry different names. English has never translated the word, partly because the nearest equivalents sound either vague or pretentious, and partly because the underlying claim is contested — blind tastings do not always support it. The word is now used in English for coffee, chocolate, oysters and, occasionally, as a metaphor for anything shaped by where it came from.

Meaningnot established

Not established

It may respell Tara, an Irish hill name; it may rest on the Latin word for earth; or it may be a build from the sound. The terminal h comes from the spelling of Hebrew names and points at none of these.

Pronouncing Terrah

TEH-ruh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The final h is entirely silent and adds nothing to either the sound or the length.

Terrah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Terrah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • Terry detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
  • Six letters with no real difficulty make it quick to write.
What to consider
  • Tara, Terra and Tarah are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The added h is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has three answers and no evidence.
