Tenika
Feminine
The middle of this name is, by accident, the Greek word for conquer — and that word once started a riot that killed tens of thousands of people and very nearly ended the Roman empire in the east. The crowd at the chariot races in Constantinople shouted it as a slogan, and the week that followed is known by it.

The story of Tenika
The chariot factions in Constantinople were political parties as much as supporters' clubs, and in the winter of 532 the two largest of them stopped fighting each other and turned on the emperor. Nika — conquer — was the chant, the city burned for a week, and Justinian had a ship prepared to flee. His wife is said to have told him that purple made a good shroud and that she was not leaving. He stayed; the army trapped the crowd in the hippodrome and killed a very large number of them; and the church that burned in the riot was rebuilt as the building that is still standing.

The American name is built from a productive front element and an ending that was attaching itself to almost anything in the 1970s. The Greek word is unrelated and reached the same letters by coincidence. Neither half of the American name means anything, which is the ordinary condition of names made this way and is not a criticism of them.
