Where it comes from

The story of Tenaya

The Mariposa Battalion went into the valley to remove the people living there and take them to a reservation in the foothills. Tenaya's band left, came back, left again; his son was killed by soldiers; the group was eventually broken up. The officer who wrote the main account named the lake after him, and recorded that Tenaya was furious about it — he already had a name for the lake, which was the name his people used, and being commemorated by the man who had removed him was not a compliment he wanted.

Not established

The name is Ahwahneechee and its meaning has not been reliably recorded; what survives comes through the accounts of the men who fought him, written in English decades later. As an American given name it appears in the 1970s and is far more likely to come from the lake — a place a great many families have camped beside — than from any direct knowledge of the man.

How the name formed

  1. an Ahwahneechee leader in the Yosemite valley
  2. the Mariposa Battalion removes his people in 1851
  3. a lake and a canyon are given his name
  4. American families take the name from the place
  5. Tenaya appears in the record in the early 1970s

Tenaya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tenaya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is soft, readable and shared with almost nobody.
  • It carries a real place and a real person rather than an assembled sound.
  • Naya is available inside it and is thoroughly current.
What to consider
  • The history behind the name is a dispossession, which is worth knowing before giving it.
  • The two pronunciations are both in honest use.
  • It is rare enough to need spelling out constantly.
