Where it comes from

Our story of Teasha

A tisane is not a kind of tea. The word comes from the Greek ptisane, meaning peeled barley or the drink made from it — barley water, essentially, which was a standard invalid drink in classical medicine and stayed one in European practice for two thousand years. French kept the word for any infusion made from something other than tea leaves, and English borrowed it back in the nineteenth century for exactly that purpose, which is why a careful menu says tisane where a loose one says herbal tea. Tea itself is a completely separate word, from a Chinese dialect, arriving by sea in the seventeenth century. Two drink words, no relationship, and the older of them started as barley.

Teasha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Teasha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
  • It is compact and fits any form without abbreviation.
What to consider
  • Tesha, Tisha and Tiesha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name gets said two ways.
  • No meaning can honestly be given for either element.
