From Tadhg to Teagan
The story of Teagan
Tadhg was a working name in medieval Ireland — borne by kings of Connacht and Munster — and so common that English speakers eventually used "Teague" as a rough shorthand for an Irishman. From the descendant surname Ó Tadhgáin came Teagan, Tegan and Tighe, carried to America by Irish families and later lifted off the surname shelf as a first name, as Ryan and Brennan were. Meanwhile Wales had its own Tegan, built from teg, and the BBC's Doctor Who gave a companion that name in the early 1980s, which lifted the Welsh spelling in Britain. American parents largely settled on Teagan, and gave it mostly to daughters — a full turn from Tadhg, which remains a man's name in Ireland today.
