Where it comes from

The story of Taylore

A tailor's pressing iron was called a goose, because the handle curved over like a bird's neck, and the trade said gooses rather than geese for the plural. The Porter in Macbeth, drunk and pretending to be the gatekeeper of hell, admits an equivocator and then a tailor who stole cloth out of a French hose, and tells him to come in and roast his goose — which is a joke on three levels at once and lands for almost no modern audience. Tailoring is full of this vocabulary: a sleeve board, a ham, a clapper, a dolly, all of them named for shapes. The goose survived into the twentieth century in trade catalogs, weighing up to twenty pounds and heated on a stove. A word for a bird, a word for a tool, and a joke that needed neither explaining in sixteen-oh-six.

Meaning

a tailor

An occupational surname from the French word for the trade, which displaced whatever English had called it before. The added final e is a modern American device and carries nothing; it marks the spelling as a name rather than the noun.

Taylore sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 54 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Taylore sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • The meaning is a real trade with a documented history.
What to consider
  • Taylor is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
  • The added letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The surname is very common as a first name, so the sound is not distinctive.
