Where it comes from

The story of Tawny

Tan came into English from French as the word for oak bark, and taune as the word for the color that bark left behind on a hide. The adjective was in English by Chaucer's century and by the seventeenth was doing the work it still does, attached to a short list of fixed things rather than used freely: the tawny owl, tawny port, the tawny eagle, a tawny mane. Very few people say a tawny anything else. As a given name it appears in American records in the middle of the twentieth century, part of the same wave that put color and gem words on certificates.

Meaning

a warm brown-orange, the color of cured leather

From the Anglo-Norman taune, from tan, the crushed oak bark used to cure hides. The color is named after the process that produced it.

Tawny sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 186 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tawny sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone who reads it already knows the word, so it needs no explanation and no sounding out.
  • It is short, ends on a bright vowel and carries an easy one-syllable short form.
  • The color behind it has a documented life in English going back to the Middle Ages.
What to consider
  • It is an adjective doing a noun's job, which sets it slightly apart from Amber, Ruby and Jade: a person can be an amber, but not a tawny.
  • Tawni, Tawnee, Tawnie and Tawnya are all in the record, and the spelling will always be asked for.
  • In modern English the word is used of animals far more often than of people.
