Dropping the y takes the grammar off. Tawny with a y is unmistakably an adjective — the ending is what English uses to make one out of a noun, as in silky and stormy — and removing it leaves a word that is not a part of speech at all, which is exactly what a name needs to be.

How old is the name Tawni?

Tawni first appears in US birth records in 1950 — 75 years ago. The typical Tawni alive today was born around 1987, making them about 38 years old. About 1,800 people named Tawni are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Tawni most popular?

Tawni peaked in 1988, reaching #1384 nationally. See the whole 1988 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Tawni

The tan in tanning is a tree. The word comes from a medieval Latin term for oak bark, which was crushed and steeped to make the liquor that turned raw hide into leather — the bark supplied the tannins, which is where that word comes from too. Only afterwards did tan come to mean the color the process produced, and later still the color a person turns in the sun. So a word that now means a shade of brown started out naming the outer layer of an oak tree, and every step between is documented.

Meaning

a warm brown, the color of tanned hide

The English color adjective, respelled. Its own history runs through French from a word about leather rather than about any natural object, which is unusual among color terms.

Tawni sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 105 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tawni sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, warm and needs no explaining at all.
  • The spelling separates the name from the adjective without changing the sound.
  • It is short and easy and never needs repeating.
What to consider
  • It is an ordinary color adjective and will be heard as one.
  • Tawny and Tawnee are both in use and the spelling gets queried.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
