Where it comes from

The story of Tawanna

Wanda is Polish, and the legend attached to it is stark: a princess of Krakow who refused a German prince, and drowned herself in the Vistula rather than accept the marriage or bring war on her people. The story is medieval and probably invented, but the name is real and old, and Polish immigration carried it into American records in the nineteenth century. The Ta- names arrived later and from somewhere else entirely, built rather than borrowed, in the same decades that produced Tamika, Tanisha and Tawanda. Where the two met, Tawanna is the result: a modern American front and an old Polish back, joined without either side being consulted.

The name was assembled rather than inherited, so no meaning attaches to the whole. The Wanda inside it does have a history, though the American Tawannas do not descend from it.

Fashion outlook

Tawanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every sound in it is easy in English and the spelling follows the sound.
  • The stress falls in the middle, which gives it a lift most English names of its length do not have.
  • It carries several short forms with quite different characters.
What to consider
  • Tawana, Tawanda, Twanna and Towanna are near neighbors and are confused constantly.
  • There is no inherited meaning to pass on; the name begins with the family that made it.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the second half of the twentieth century.
