This one was an ordinary early Christian name in the Latin west, faded there almost completely by the medieval period, and survived in the east because the Orthodox calendar kept the saint and the calendar governed naming. The result is a name that sounds unmistakably Russian to an English speaker and is in fact Roman — one of a small set, including Yevgeny and Valentina and Ksenia, that Russia preserved from a naming stock the countries nearer Rome abandoned.
