In Pushkin's verse novel she is a shy provincial girl who writes to a man she barely knows, tells him plainly that she loves him, and is coolly turned down; years later, married and grand, she is the one refusing him. The letter is the passage every Russian reader can quote, and it is written in a slightly different meter from the rest of the book because Pushkin frames it as a translation — she would have written it in French, and he says so. A young woman's declaration, presented as a document in another language, is one of the strangest and most affecting things in the poem.
