Our story of Tarina
Taranto is a port in the heel of Italy, and two words carry its name. One is the tarantula, a large wolf spider found in the area, whose bite was believed to cause a condition called tarantism: restlessness, sweating, a compulsion to move. The other is the tarantella, the fast whirling dance that was the prescribed cure. Musicians were called in, the sufferer danced until exhaustion, and the poison was held to have been driven out through movement. Physicians took this seriously for centuries and wrote it up carefully. The spider that lives there is not dangerous to people, and modern accounts of tarantism treat it as something other than a spider bite, but the dance survived the diagnosis and is still played at weddings. Tarina is not from any of that. It simply arrives at the same doorstep.

Fashion outlook
Tarina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three open syllables and no difficult sounds make it easy in English and in several other languages.
- Rina comes off the back of it as a short form and stands perfectly well alone.
- It is rare in the record while sounding entirely ordinary, which is a comfortable place to be.
- It will be written Tarena, Taryna and Terina by people working from sound.
- Two readings of the middle vowel are possible and the spelling settles neither.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
