Taneshia
Feminine
Taneshia is the long spelling of a name that has several, and the letter that makes it long is doing no work at all. English writes the sound at the center of this name with the two letters s and h, and those two letters already contain everything the i was added to supply.

Our story of Taneshia
It is often said that names in this family are shortened from Tatiana by way of the Russian Tanya, and there is no reason to believe it. Tanya did come into American use from Russian literature, but it arrived among readers, in a different decade and a different part of the country from the naming tradition that produced Taneshia, and the two families never overlapped in the record. What the American Ta- names actually share is an opening syllable that could be attached to anything, which is why the same syllable turns up in front of a dozen different endings and the same endings turn up behind a dozen different syllables. The spelling with an extra i is the elaborated member of the set. English writes the sh sound with two letters that already do the whole job, so the i between the h and the a is silent in every accent, and the name is said exactly as the shorter spellings are.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There is no established source. The name belongs to a large American family assembled by sound in the second half of the twentieth century, and the glosses in circulation for it name a language and then supply a meaning without showing the word. Naming the language is the tell rather than the evidence. What can be said is structural: a common opening syllable, a common ending, and a spelling chosen from among several that all sound the same.
Pronouncing Taneshia
tuh-NEE-shuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The i in the last syllable is silent, so this spelling is said exactly like Tanesha and Tanisha; the difference exists only on paper.

Fashion outlook
Taneshia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The rhythm is the standard American one for a woman's name, so it sounds settled rather than invented.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English and it is never mispronounced once heard.
- Two good short forms that are nothing like each other, one soft and one brisk.
- There are at least four spellings of this sound in general use, so the name must be spelled out every single time.
- The extra i buys nothing that can be heard, and a child may reasonably ask what it is for.
- The name is firmly dated to one American generation, which makes it read as a mother's name.
