Tanae joins a free front syllable to an ending whose whole job is to put the stress on the last syllable, which English otherwise finds very hard to do. The Latin word its front approaches got into English as a piece of university slang.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tanae

Tandem is a Latin adverb meaning at length or at last, and it is about time, not space. Eighteenth-century English university wits applied it as a joke to a carriage drawn by horses harnessed one behind the other rather than side by side — at length, you see, in the wrong dimension. The joke was good enough to become the standard word, first for the harnessing, then for the carriage, then for the bicycle, and now for any arrangement of two things in line or working together. Nobody using it means anything about time. It is one of a small set of words that entered English as deliberate bad Latin — along with omnibus, which is a dative plural meaning for all, and which shortened into the word bus.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Neither element carries a meaning. The front is a free American piece and the ending is a device for marking a stressed final vowel, which English has no standard spelling for. Nothing records what a family meant by the combination.

Pronouncing Tanae

tuh-NAY

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ae at the end writes a long a in final position, which English has no other regular way of spelling.

Tanae sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tanae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a short name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
  • It is compact and fits any form without abbreviation.
What to consider
  • Tanay, Tanaya and Tenae are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The ae ending is read as a plain a by strangers, which moves the stress.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
