Where it comes from

Our story of Tamora

Titus Andronicus was Shakespeare's first tragedy and, on the evidence of print runs and contemporary references, the most popular play he ever wrote in his own lifetime. It contains fourteen killings, a rape, three severed hands, a severed tongue and a scene in which two men are baked into a pie and served to their mother. Later centuries found it unbearable: it was rewritten, cut, disowned as not his at all, and for most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries effectively unperformable. T. S. Eliot called it one of the stupidest plays ever written. It came back in the twentieth century, when audiences who had seen what a century could do stopped finding the violence implausible, and modern productions treat it seriously. Tamora, queen of the Goths, is the engine of most of it.

Not established

If it comes from the play, it is an invented name with no meaning; Shakespeare's source for it has never been identified. If it is a respelling of Tamara, it carries a Hebrew word for a date palm. The record holds no evidence for either.

Tamora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tamora sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • It is genuinely rare while being built from familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Tamara and Tamera are both commoner and will be written for it.
  • The character it may come from is a murderer, and readers who know the play will know that.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
