Our story of Tammera
A Russian poet took the name for one of his best-known pieces, and what he made of it is not flattering. His Tamara lives in a tower above a gorge in the Caucasus, calls travelers up to her at night, and has their bodies thrown into the river before morning; the poem is short, formal and entirely without a moral. It draws on a Georgian legend that had attached itself to the ruins of a real castle, and it has nothing to do with the historical monarch whose name it borrowed, though the two have been confused ever since. The poem was set to music, made into a ballet, and painted repeatedly, which is how a legend about a tower became the thing many Russians think of first.
Meaning
date palm
The Hebrew word means the date palm and the reading is settled for the parent name. The Georgian and Russian form adds an ending and nothing else. The doubled m and the substituted vowel in this American spelling are silent in the sense that matters: neither changes the sound or the sense.
How the name formed
- A Hebrew word for the date palm
- A Georgian royal name built on it
- Adopted into Russian in the nineteenth century
- Tammera as an American respelling

Pronouncing Tammera
tuh-MER-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Russian puts the stress in the same place; Hebrew puts it on the last syllable of the shorter parent name, so the two languages give the name quite different rhythms.

Fashion outlook
Tammera sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
