The i in the middle of this name is not from anywhere. It is a linking vowel, put in because the two pieces either side of it will not join without one, and it carries no meaning and no history. English builds words this way constantly and almost never admits it.

Where it comes from

The story of Tamisha

The name furthest back in this chain belongs to a woman who is in the New Testament for a reason worth knowing. Matthew opens his gospel with a genealogy, and genealogies of that period list fathers; four women are named in it anyway, and each of them has a story that a family compiling a respectable lineage would have preferred to leave out. Tamar is the first. She was widowed twice, denied the protection she was owed by her father-in-law, disguised herself, secured proof of what he had done and produced it in public when he tried to have her executed. The text lets him say that she was more in the right than he was, and then puts her in the list.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front element points toward the short forms of Tamara and Tamar, and the ending contributes nothing translatable. With a linking vowel in the middle carrying no sense either, there is nothing to report as a meaning.

Fashion outlook

Tamisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tami sits inside it as an established and familiar short form.
  • The rhythm is even and comfortable to say quickly.
  • The spelling follows the sound with no ambiguity.
What to consider
  • There is no inherited meaning, and the middle of the word is empty by construction.
  • Tameesha, Tamesha and Tamiesha all exist and the spelling gets queried.
  • It reads clearly as belonging to a particular American generation.
