Where it comes from

Our story of Tamiah

Robert Burns wrote a long comic poem about a farmer who stays too late at the pub, rides home through a storm, and interrupts a gathering of witches in a ruined church. The farmer's name was Tam, and the poem was such a success that the flat wool bonnet Scotsmen wore became a tam o' shanter, after him. Shops still sell them under that name. It is a rare thing for a fictional character to name a garment, and rarer still for the garment to outlive the readership: plenty of people who own one have never read a line of Burns. Tamiah does not come from the poem. But the syllable at the front of it has had a good career.

No source has been documented. Tamia, Tamika and Amiah are all near neighbors and none has been shown to be the parent. The ending is a common modern one and carries no sense of its own here.

Tamiah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 65 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tamiah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tami and Mia are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • It is soft throughout, with no consonant that gives anyone trouble.
  • It is distinctive on a page without being hard to read.
What to consider
  • Two readings of the middle vowel are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • The final h is silent, so it will be dropped by nearly everyone writing the name from speech.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
