Where it comes from

Our story of Tameca

A tabor was a small drum carried by a medieval musician and played with one hand while the other worked a pipe. French made a bigger version of the word, tambour, for a drum generally, and then a diminutive of that for the small frame drum with jingles that English calls a tambourine — a little drum, twice removed. The word then jumped fields. Embroiderers work on fabric stretched taut between two hoops, and because the result looks exactly like a drum head, the frame and the technique were both called tambour; tambour work is still the name for chain-stitch embroidery done with a hook on stretched cloth, and it is how most beaded couture is made. A word for a drum now names a piece of needlework, a rolling shutter on a desk and a kind of crochet, all because of the shape.

No source is documented. The name was assembled in America from a front syllable and an ending taken from longer names, and the spellings multiplied faster than the name did. Glosses attaching it to Hebrew or an African language are added afterwards and produce no word.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The c says k, which is the one thing the spelling could mislead a reader about and almost never does.

Tameca sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 78 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tameca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and sound nothing like each other.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Tameka, Tamika and Tomeka are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time, without exception.
  • No meaning can honestly be given, and the ones circulating online are invented.
