Tamarah
Feminine · “Date palm”
Tamarah is Tamara with a silent h fixed to the end, and Tamara is itself an expansion of something shorter. The name at the bottom of the stack is one of the oldest in the Hebrew Bible; the layer above it is Georgian and Russian; the h is American. The story of Tamarah
Tamar appears three times in the Hebrew Bible, and the name left Hebrew by two different roads. The Church carried it west in Latin dress. Georgia and the Slavic-speaking lands took it as Tamara, adding the final -a that both languages want on a woman's name, and there it became royal and ordinary at once. What reached English was mostly the second road, and it arrived through Russian culture rather than through scripture: the dancer Tamara Karsavina, who created the title role of Stravinsky's Firebird for Diaghilev's company in 1910, was the Tamara that English-speaking audiences met first, and the name kept a faint Russian accent for decades afterwards. Tamarah is the American footnote, an h added to a syllable that was itself an addition.
Meaning
Date palm
Hebrew tamar is the date palm, and it is still the ordinary word for the fruit. The tree carried more weight in the ancient Near East than an English reader expects: it fed people, roofed houses and stood as a figure for an upright, flourishing life. Nothing in the name describes a person's character. It names a tree and lets the tree do the work.

Pronouncing Tamarah
tuh-MAR-uh
Two live stress patterns in American English: tuh-MAR-uh, with weight in the middle, and TAM-uh-ruh, with weight at the front. The h is silent in both, so it changes the look of the name and nothing else.

Fashion outlook
Tamarah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is familiar across Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, so it needs no explaining once it is said aloud.
- Two established short forms that go in opposite directions, Tammy and Mara, leave the child a real choice later.
- It has been in continuous use long enough that nobody hears it as invented, however the ending is spelled.
- Almost everyone writing the name from hearing it will drop the final h, so expect to correct forms, rosters and prescriptions for life.
- Tammy carries a strong mid-century American flavor the full name does not, and a child given the short form early tends to keep it.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled, so most first meetings include a small negotiation about how the name is said.
