Where it comes from

The story of Takayla

The novel sold in enormous numbers and had a peculiar effect on the record. Fiction usually supplies whole names — a character called Wendy or Jessica, taken up as she stands. This one supplied a sound instead, and the sound behaved like a suffix: within a few years the American record carried the base spelled half a dozen ways and combined with almost every available front element. It is one of the clearest cases in the whole record of a single book acting on a language rather than on a fashion, and most of the families using the sound have never heard of the book.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The base is generally traced to that novel, whose author said she wanted a name that sounded plausible for a prehistoric child and had no modern associations. She got the opposite: the sound was picked up immediately, spread through American naming in every possible spelling, and combined with front elements to produce dozens of new names. A Hebrew and Yiddish name of similar sound exists independently and is unrelated to any of this. Takayla adds a front element to the base and has no meaning of its own.

How the name formed

  1. a novelist invents a name for a prehistoric child
  2. the sound spreads through American naming in the 1980s
  3. front elements attach to it freely
  4. Takayla appears in the record in the middle 1980s
  5. peaks at the turn of the millennium

Takayla sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 73 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Takayla sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kayla sits inside it as a complete and universally recognized name.
  • It is read correctly at sight because the spelling matches the sound.
  • The rhythm is strong and carries well when called.
What to consider
  • Kayla is many times commoner and the front element will be dropped in speech.
  • There is no meaning for the compound, only a novelist's invention underneath it.
  • It is closely dated to the decades either side of the millennium.
