The story of Tajuana
Juana Ines de la Cruz took vows in Mexico City in the 1660s partly because a convent was the only place a woman could keep a library, and she assembled one of the largest in the New World — four thousand books, scientific instruments, musical instruments. She wrote plays, love poetry, and a defense of a woman's right to study that is still read as the first feminist argument written in the Americas. Church authorities pressed her for years, and in the end she signed a renunciation in her own blood, sold the library, and gave the money to the poor. She died two years later nursing sisters in an epidemic.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The back of the name is Juana, feminine of Juan, from a Hebrew phrase about God's favor. The front is an American element that attaches to a great many names of this period and carries no meaning of its own. The two halves come from systems that do not combine, so the compound cannot be translated even though both of its parts can. Reference works do not list it, and there is no family tradition on record explaining the join.

Fashion outlook
Tajuana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is soft throughout and easy to say once the j has been explained.
- Juana sits inside it as a complete name with four hundred years of history.
- The rhythm carries well, with the stress in the middle where English likes it.
- It is one letter from the name of a Mexican border city, and people will hear that first.
- The j will be read the English way by anyone who has not met the name before.
- There is no meaning for the compound, only meanings for its two halves.
