Where it comes from

Our story of Taiya

Most words with two proposed origins have one real one and one folk story. Typhoon is the exception: it appears to have both. Greek had typhon, a whirlwind and a monster, which passed into Arabic and then into Portuguese and reached English in the sixteenth century as touffon, used for storms in the Indian Ocean. Separately, sailors in the China seas brought back a word from Chinese — tai fung, great wind, or the Cantonese equivalent — for the storms of that coast. The two met in English, meant roughly the same thing, and merged into a single word whose spelling shows both parents: the ph is Greek and the oo is Asian. Lexicographers describe it as a genuine case of convergence rather than a choice between accounts.

Taiya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Taiya sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • Tai detaches as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
  • Every letter behaves as English expects.
What to consider
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
  • Taya, Taiyah and Tyia are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • There is no meaning to give, and glosses offered for names of this shape are invented.
