Tabbitha
Feminine · “gazelle”
Tabbitha doubles a letter that is single in Aramaic, in Greek and in every English Bible, and the doubling changes nothing audible. The woman the name comes from is given something in the text that almost no other woman in it gets: a job, with the work itself produced as evidence.

The story of Tabbitha
The scene in Acts is short and unusually concrete. A woman in Joppa dies, and the community sends for Peter; when he arrives, the widows of the town are standing around weeping and holding up the coats and other garments she had made while she was with them. The detail is doing real work. The New Testament names a great many women and tells us what almost none of them did for a living; here the evidence of the work is physically in the room, held up by the people it clothed, and the text calls her a disciple using a form of the word it uses for no other woman. What follows is a raising, told in a handful of verses. What is remembered by anyone who reads it carefully is the widows with the clothes.
Meaning
gazelle
The Aramaic word for a gazelle, and the text supplies its own Greek equivalent in the same sentence, which is why the same woman appears under two names. The gazelle was the standard image for grace across the ancient Near East, so the name is a compliment about movement.

Fashion outlook
Tabbitha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented, concrete and flattering.
- Tabby is available at once as a familiar form.
- Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
- Tabitha is the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
- The doubled letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- The short form is also the ordinary word for a cat's markings.
